The central government has taken a tough stand against the misuse of Grok. The government has written to social media company X, seeking a report on its actions to ensure immediate compliance with the prevention of the hosting, creation, publication, transmission, sharing, or uploading of obscene, nude, indecent, and sexually explicit content through the misuse of AI-based services like Grok and other xAI services.

Grok is an AI chatbot and assistance tool developed by Elon Musk's company xAI. The tool can create a picture of someone and answer questions. Recently, several cases of Grok's misuse have surfaced. Some people protested on social media and demanded government action.

Laws are not being implemented

The government said in the letter that from time to time, through public discussions and representations from various parliamentary stakeholders, it has been pointed out to you that certain categories of content being broadcast on your platform do not comply with applicable laws relating to decency and obscenity.

The government also mentioned fake accounts

The government stated that, in particular, it has been observed that the service "ooGrok AI," developed by you and made available on the X platform, is being misused by users to post obscene images and videos depicting women in a derogatory or vulgar manner. Surprisingly, this is being used through fake accounts.

Questions raised on the security and system of the platform

The letter further states that the issue is not limited to fake IDs; Grok also targets women who post photos or videos on social media. In such cases, their images are manipulated by Grok's AI and sometimes presented in a pornographic manner. This type of behavior demonstrates a serious failure of the platform's security measures and systems.

The government cited the law

In this context, and without prejudice to the action taken or being taken by the authorized agencies under applicable laws, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (Ministry) is of the view that the regulatory provisions of the Information Technology Act, 2000 (IT Act) and the Information Technology Rules, 2021 are not being adequately complied with by your platform.
